Applied theatre is a community-based practice which uses theatre techniques to explore issues that participants deem relevant to their lives, to analyze conditions and imagine possibilities or seek solutions. While applied theatre is not performance focused, it does develop and make use of performance skills. Youth find applied theatre an enjoyable and empowering approach to making their voices heard. For this workshop series, youth are invited to attend one or more workshop to identify issues, explore their experiences and imagine possibilities for their lives. While the youth participants will decide what topics our workshops will address, as I’ve heard many concerned Gabriola community members express that youth are an underserved population on the Island, I would propose that our workshops could explore what life is like on Gabriola for youth and how the the community could better support them to thrive. This could be an opportunity for Gabriola youth to share their perspectives with the community. Workshop outcomes might be a community performance, if youth want to perform, or they could lead to the development of a list of recommendations or some other creative form of expression.
Note: While the workshops are free, please pre-register in order to facilitate our planning.
No prior theatre experience is necessary. Snacks will be provided.
